Jazz Chisholm Jr. Headed to the Derby—But Health Concerns Remain

The Home Run Derby is designed for flair. For strength. For highlights that become popular online. To put it simply, New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. was born for this occasion.
However, it may also pose a danger.
Chisholm is the most recent Yankees player to try his hand at it—with actual swings. He will participate in Monday night's Derby in Atlanta, adding his name to a roster that features Aaron Judge, Gary Sánchez, Giancarlo Stanton, and more. For a young athlete, this is an enjoyable chance to shine under the spotlight.
However, this raises an important question: Is it worthwhile?
Chisholm has dealt with two separate injuries this season — a neck problem and a slight oblique injury. He has taken some time off, controlled his playing load, and gradually returned to action. Now he's entering a battle that requires consistent, all-out swinging efforts.
Such a swing total means something. And if any member of the Yankees' team requires a reminder of the consequences, all they need to do is glance at Judge.
The final Yankees rider to claim victory at the Derby was Judge in 2017. He was spectacular, launching balls high into the air with ease. However, he eventually required shoulder surgery, an issue he has not explicitly connected to the Derby, though he has not ruled it out either.
He has not participated in the competition since then.
For his part, Chisholm states he isn't aiming for maximum effort. "I don't have to push myself to 100%," he mentioned to journalists this week. "Let my inherent strength do the work."
It's the correct attitude. However, once you've addressed fundamental and upper-body problems within one season, each swing holds slightly more significance.
Chisholm has the potential to create an unforgettable moment. He might even emerge victorious. However, in July, the true value isn't always found in the prize itself.
