Air Quality Alert Issued in Parts of New York Due to Wildfire Smoke from Canada

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Department of Health have released an Air Quality Health Alert regarding small particles on Monday.
The warning applies to the Eastern Lake Ontario, Central New York, and Western New York areas because of smoke originating from fires in Canada.
The recommendation will take place between 10 a.m. and 11:59 p.m., applying to multiple counties such as northern Cayuga, Jefferson, Monroe, Oswego, Wayne, Allegany, Broome, Chemung, and more.
The DEC and DOH release these alerts when expected pollution levels, whether from ozone or tiny airborne particles (PM2.5), are forecasted to surpass an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 100. An elevated AQI level suggests more significant potential harm to health.
Apologies, but we were unable to load this embedded material.
Small airborne particles or liquid drops measuring 2.5 micrometers or smaller make up fine particulate matter. These substances typically come from burning activities, including car emissions, energy production facilities, and wildfires. Coming into contact with PM2.5 might lead to immediate health issues, such as eye, nasal, and throat discomfort, along with symptoms like coughing, sneezing, a stuffy nose, and difficulty breathing. Additionally, it can aggravate illnesses like asthma and cardiovascular diseases. Individuals who have pre-existing heart or respiratory ailments, young people, and older adults tend to experience greater vulnerability.
To lower risk, people should limit contact with both outside and inside sources of PM2.5 and steer clear of intense exercise in regions where levels are elevated. Additional details can be found on the DEC website and DOH websites. Residents of New York can keep updated by registering for Air Quality Warnings via DEC Delivers or by dialing the free phone number for air quality information: 1-800-535-1345.
