A 1967 Ford Mustang on Bring a Trailer That's Also an Italian Exotic

  • Most people know about the '67 Mustang, but not this particular model.
  • This is a genuine Zagato creation.
  • Having previously participated in the Mille Miglia, you are qualified to compete in the event again later.

Presumably, you've heard of the term Spaghetti Western. Well, here's what that genre might look like in car form: a traditional American hero, but done up by an Italian auteur. A 1967 Mustang GT fastback model is an exclusive Elaborazione Zagato, featuring design modifications by one of Italy's most renowned coachbuilders, and it's being sold on Bring a Trailer (which, like) Car and Driver , is part of Hearst Autos). The look might not appeal to all, but its history ensures it will sell for a good price.

This vehicle exited the Ford production facility during the spring of 1967 and was sent to Italy together with a Shelby GT350. Initially painted white, it came equipped with a 289 cubic inch V-8 engine and a four-speed transmission. Later, it was repainted green and received customized exterior modifications that resulted in a design resembling a Peugeot at the front.

From the back three-quarters, this vehicle remains clearly a Mustang. From the front, only the running horse emblem hints at what lies beneath for those confused by the boxy headlights and hood vent. It’s unlikely to please all tastes, yet its status as the sole example ever produced ensures extraordinary scarcity.

Initially owned by its first buyer in the early 1980s, this Mustang Zagato remained stored for more than ten years before undergoing restoration. While restoring the vehicle, the choice was initially made to paint it back to its original white color; however, this change was later undone during a repainting in 2019. By then, the car received certification from Zagato, enhancing its genuine credentials.

It has now been confirmed that the car will take part in the 2021 Mille Miglia. This significantly enhances its desirability, since being invited to compete means it qualifies for upcoming competitions. Entering the Mille is somewhat challenging, and this Mustang Zagato could be exactly what you're looking for.

Above everything else, although the distinctive body style is unique, this vehicle still houses a V-8 Mustang engine. It features a 289 V-8 powered by a four-barrel carburetor, offering ample torque, along with an abundance of readily available mechanical replacement parts to ensure continued operation, plus a spacious 2+2 interior. The general state of the car is neat, yet it isn’t a pristine museum exhibit that remains undriven.

One of the enjoyable aspects is the "I haven't come across it before" reaction you experience when arriving at an event in this vehicle. While many have seen a 1967 Mustang GT fastback previously, this particular car will definitely attract attention.

The sale concludes on July 17.
