Scalp Cooling Devices: A Potential Solution for Cancer Patients to Retain Their Hair

The families of two individuals who lost their battle with cancer have gathered £19,000 to fund advanced technology aimed at assisting cancer patients in retaining their hair throughout their treatments.

During chemotherapy, scalp cooling caps are used to reduce the likelihood of patients experiencing hair loss — a side effect that may lead to emotional distress.

Thanks to two Northwood families, two advanced machines have been acquired for the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre.

The Kelly family collected £14,750 in tribute to Kim Kelly to express their gratitude towards the center for the treatment she got in 2023.

Dave, Kim's husband, along with her daughter Maia, handed over the cheque to the center managers.

An additional £4,370 was gathered by Jackie Parrott’s family, who were likewise recipients of care at the facility.

Jackie’s spouse Garry visited the facility to check out one of the scalp cooling devices that were acquired for the center through fundraising by its charitable organization.

We have successfully raised £40,000, covering the cost of two dual-scalp cooling devices," stated Beth McNeil from the charity. "Additionally, we have gathered sufficient resources to provide various cold caps for the chemotherapy unit—thanks to the contributions from two families and all those who assisted with fundraising for our campaign.

Each month, hundreds of patients are utilising these devices, which include scalp cooling technology designed to decrease the probability of hair loss throughout the therapy process.

Hair loss can be a distressing side effect," Beth stated. "Therefore, making this equipment accessible to a greater number of patients is significant and can make a real impact for those experiencing this challenging period.

Such initiatives would not be possible without the backing of the families and generous supporters who, according to the charity, "exceed expectations" for patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Beth added: “It’s been wonderful to show these families around the centre to see how the funds they raised in memory of their loved ones are being spent and the real difference they are making for people every day.”

The facility located at White Hill in Northwood, managed by the East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust, features a chemotherapy and immunotherapy unit that cares for approximately 300 patients weekly. This unit utilises both traditional and advanced pharmaceuticals to treat various forms of cancer.
