Mediterranean Plant Shows Promise as Ulcerative Colitis Treatment in Rat Studies
New research in rats suggests that a plant from the Mediterranean region might be an effective treatment for ulcerative colitis, a form of inflammatory bowel disease. These findings have been published in the journal. Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture .
Several antioxidants and anti-inflammatories are employed to manage ulcerative colitis; however, these treatments may lead to various adverse effects. To assess the efficacy of Arbutus unedo The plant commonly known as the strawberry tree, which originates from the Mediterranean area, was used in investigations where researchers administered extracts from this plant to rodents prior to subjecting them to a substance that triggers ulcerative colitis.
The pre-treatment protected the colon’s lining from alterations and resulted in reduced numbers of colonic lesions when compared to no pre-treatment. Additionally, it lowered the levels of several proteins responsible for oxidative stress and inflammation.
