Covid Booster Shots: Urgent Need for Greater Uptake in the UK

The NHS in Somerset is urging people at the highest risk of serious illness from Covid-19 to sign up for their spring vaccination to boost their protection. Many have not yet got the jab.

As of now, more than 53,000 individuals in the area have received vaccinations since the commencement of the seasonal program in April.

However, health officials are worried because 70% of individuals with compromised immune systems haven’t stepped forward, with the deadline of June 17 fast approaching.

A representative from NHS Somerset stated: “Individuals who have weakened immune systems—such as those receiving chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, and people suffering from illnesses like HIV—are considerably more vulnerable to severe complications from COVID-19. As per national recommendations, these persons ought to receive routine vaccinations to maintain their immunity.”

You may qualify for a Covid-19 vaccination if any of the following apply:

you are receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy;

you have had a solid organ transplantation;

you have blood cancer like leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma;

If you're taking medications like high-dose steroids or immunosuppressants for autoimmune disorders, which can weaken your immune system.

you have progressed to an advanced stage of HIV or AIDS;

you either have primary or acquired immunodeficiency;

You are undergoing kidney dialysis or have undergone a stem cell transplant.

Mike Kelly, vaccination programme lead at NHS Somerset, said: "We are concerned that many people who need the vaccine are missing out.

"Whether you've been immunosuppressed and vaccinated for the past few years or were only recently diagnosed with cancer, you are entitled to a Covid-19 vaccination. It's essential protection and it's easy to access.

We encourage individuals to check their eligibility by consulting the online 'Green Book' and to schedule their vaccination at the earliest opportunity.
