Britons Urged to Return or Destroy Milk Due to Deadly Bacteria Scare
Kenneth Hanna's Farm Shop has initiated a recall for all two-litre containers of Ken’s Raw Jersey Milk across Northern Ireland because they may be contaminated with Shiga-toxin producing E. coli (STEC). This recall encompasses all batches and use-by dates of the item.
The Food Standards Agency has issued a Product Recall Information Notice (PRIN) warning customers about possible health hazards.
The farm shop has put up point-of-sale notifications informing customers who might have bought the recalled milk about the situation.
This recall is being conducted as a preventive step after the potential presence of STEC was identified, a type of bacteria that can lead to severe illnesses in people who consume affected products.
This recall specifically affects customers in Northern Ireland who purchased the product.
STEC infections can lead to serious health issues, featuring symptoms such as intense diarrhoea (that might contain blood), stomach pain, and occasionally, hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
HUS is a critical disorder that has the potential to cause renal failure and could be life-threatening in severe instances.
The Food Standards Agency recommends that individuals who experience such symptoms should avoid going to their workplace, school, or nursery until they have remained free of symptoms for a minimum of 48 hours.
This precaution is necessary to prevent spreading the infection to others, as STEC can be highly contagious.
The company’s statement said: "Emergency Notice! To all customers, kindly pay attention to this announcement. Out of an abundance of caution, we are initiating a recall for every batch and expiration date of our unpasteurized cow's milk because there may be a connection between it and cases of E. coli infection."
Kindly either return or dispose of any affected milk or items produced using raw milk.
The recall has been put into place as a precautionary step to protect public health, considering the severe implications of STEC contamination.
