VT Hospital Support Staff Approve Union Contract

More than 500 support personnel at Central Vermont Medical Center opted to approve their initial union agreement on Thursday. This decision followed an extensive 18-hour negotiation session held over night the previous week.

The recently signed three-year agreement will increase salaries by approximately 27% on average, setting the highest initial wage for support personnel within the UVM Health Network. This pact encompasses multiple clauses such as compensated leave for employees who experience workplace assaults, measures aimed at enhancing safe staffing practices, and better job protection.

Jeanne Silva, who has been cleaning the hospital for six years, described the contract as "transformative, not just for the 500 support staff at our hospital, but for our whole community."

The support staff will become part of the 500-member nursing and technical staff union at Central Vermont Healthcare United. This move formally guarantees union benefits and enhances work environments for most of CVMC’s workforce.

Amanda Mills-Brown, who serves as both the union president and a longtime nurse, expresses her delight at welcoming the support staff "... into our union," stating that the team is "delighted about this new collaboration." She anticipates that this alliance will aid in "further enhancing our hospital as an excellent environment for employment and healthcare provision."
